Dithering and Effects Basics

Overview of visual effects and algorithms available in the application.

Short Summary

This page explains the different visual algorithms and effects you can apply to your images, videos, and 3D scenes.

Core Concepts

  • Dithering: Creating the illusion of color depth by using patterns of available colors. Useful for retro aesthetics and limited color palettes.
  • Color quantization: Reducing the number of colors in an image to match a specific palette.
  • Real-time processing: All effects update instantly as you adjust parameters.

Available Algorithms

CRT

Simulates old CRT monitor effects with scanlines, curvature, RGB shift, and phosphor glow. Includes VHS distortion options for retro video aesthetics.

Bayer Dithering

Ordered dithering using Bayer matrices (2x2, 4x4, 8x8). Creates characteristic tiling patterns. Adjustable color levels, scale, contrast, and optional blue noise.

Pixel Dithering

Creates large pixel blocks for a pixelated appearance. Adjustable block size and color quantization.

Floyd-Steinberg (2D only)

Error diffusion dithering that preserves detail well. Works only with 2D images. Adjustable error diffusion strength and color levels.

System 84

Vintage computer aesthetic inspired by classic systems. Dithering with pattern-based effects and adjustable vignette.

ASCII

Converts images to text-based art using characters. Four styles available:

  • Classic: Traditional ASCII with standard character sets.
  • Duotone: Two-color ASCII art.
  • Box Drawing: Uses box-drawing characters for geometric patterns.
  • Sentence: Uses custom text to form the image.

Frequency Modulation

Applies frequency modulation by varying a signal's instantaneous frequency over time, rather than leaving it constant.

Grid Glyph

Grid-based character rendering with customizable glyphs.

Grid Lights

Creates a grid of light points, simulating LED displays.

Blob Track (Video only)

Tracks moving areas in video and displays blob IDs and tracking information.

YOLO Track (Video only)

Real-time object detection and tracking in video using the YOLO model. Displays object labels and bounding boxes.

Pixel Sort (2D only)

Sorts pixels based on brightness or hue along specific angles. Creates glitch-art style effects. Works only with 2D images.

Choosing an Algorithm

  • For retro computer/TV look: Use CRT or System 84.
  • For limited color palettes: Use Bayer Dithering or Floyd-Steinberg.
  • For text-based art: Use ASCII with the style that fits your needs.
  • For video analysis: Use Blob Track or YOLO Track.
  • For creative glitch effects: Use Pixel Sort.
